Remembrance of Things Past

The site has a news item today noting that George Jones is winding it down. But a long wind down it will be: He is embarking on a year-long goodbye tour and will continue recording.

The old guard is moving on. And it’s too bad: You won’t find lyrics like those of White Lightening in modern country music. It’s hard not to like verses such as this one, as posted at Cowboy Lyrics:

Well the “G” men, “T” men, revenuers, too

Searchin’ for the place where he made his brew

They were looking, tryin to book him,

But my pappy kept a-cookin’

Whshhhoooh . . . white lightnin’

Not only is it funny, but it speaks of a time that is long gone. In many ways that’s for the better, but it is a bit sad at the same time.

They should work the song into an episode of Breaking Bad. Another interesting thing about this clip is that that guitar solo is solid rockabilly, not country.
