The CD is 30

The CD turns 30 years old today. The Next Web notes that on Oct. 1, 1982, Billy Joel’s album 52nd Street – which initially was released in four years earlier – was re-released by Sony on a compact disk. The company simultaneously introduced the Sony CDP-101, the first CD player.

I was an early adopter, in 1984. The player was $500, but it lasted 20 years and had tons of features that wouldn’t be available on the more wallet-friendly models to follow. I’ve never missed cleaning and caring for vinyl records and turntables. I use a victrola as a phone stand, but rarely crank it up.

The first CD that I purchased was Van Morrison’s Moondance. That disc still works (and I have had one or two fail.) Van’s latest album drops tomorrow, some 45 years after “Brown Eyed Girl” became his first hit.

Thanks. Don’t remember my first CD. Maybe I’ll feature some Van Morrison this week, thanks.
