On this Day in 1979…

The Knack’s great My Sharona — which features one of the most infectious hooks ever — was awarded a gold record on this day in 1979. The lead guitar player, who I believe is named Berton Averre, is terrific.

A huge hit during my college days. The guitarist (you got his name right) had the music for the song years before The Knack. The lead singer (the late Doug Fieger) wrote the lyrics, inspired by a girlfriend. You can probably guess her name. She was pictured on the sleeve for the 45 single.

I heard the song recently, as part of the soundtrack for the film Super 8, which is set in 1979 (or so.)

Fieger has a brother, Geoffery, who is a big-time attorney in the Detroit area. The brother even had an unsuccessful run for Governor of Michigan.

Thanks. We’re about the same age. That’s very interesting history…
