James Brown: Night Train

The brilliance of YouTube, Daily Motion and all the sites like them — besides all the great performances — is that they consist of what really are millions upon millions of tiny time capsules. The above version of Night Train is from the old show Shindig! This episode also featured The Kinks, Booker T. and the MGs, Billy Preston and Glen Campbell. All were in the process of becoming stars; Brown already was there.

Apparently, all the guests came on stage at the end of the show. I believe that The Kinks, Booker T. and Campbell are briefly visible. In any case, that’s quite a shindig. A shindig, for younger visitors, is a 1960s colloquialism for a party.

Here are Out of Sight, Living in America, I Feel Good, Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag and Sexmachine. Two bios make the point that Brown was so poor growing up that he was expelled from school for “insufficient clothing.” That probably explains how he acted, though of course it doesn’t excuse it. Here is Brown’s Facebook page and a discography.
